General Information

The City of North Plains public works crew maintains over 15 miles of water line, 13.5 miles of streets and drainage ditches, 3.5 acres of landscaping and building maintenance at the City Hall and three public parks.

Water

The Water Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's water system which consists of over 13.5 miles of water lines ranging in sizes from 2 to 16 inches in diameter. To maintain this system, crews regularly inspect and service the reservoir, booster station, main line valves and air relief valves. In addition, the crew regularly inspect, paint and exercise fire hydrants, and flush mains. Crews also operate the City's cross connection program which ensures that our water does not become contaminated and that it complies with City and State regulations. Street and Storm

The Street Division is responsible for management of the City's Pavement Management Program (PMP). The PMP includes street inspections, contract preparation and administration on large-scale pavement maintenance projects designed to maintain the City's road system.

In 2003 the City had 184,500 square feet of road surface slurry sealed and 16,600 feet of surface chip sealed. Surface restoration is funded through City Transportation User Fees.

The City's road system consists of approximately 14 miles of roadway. The street crew is responsible for maintenance of these roadways and their adjacent bike paths, including patching potholes, installation of new signs, straightening of existing signs, and response to citizen requests and complaints. The Division also maintains a regular maintenance schedule for monthly street sweeping, street light and the repainting of bikeway striping and legend crosswalk, stop bars and traffic lane stripes.

Maintenance work also includes various storm maintenance tasks such as cleaning inlets, outfalls, drainage basin areas and catch basins; roadside mowing along unimproved drainage ditches and repair of dead-end barricades.

Parks and Building Maintenance

Crews maintain 3.5 acres of parks and landscaping around public buildings. Building maintenance includes repair, alteration and preventative maintenance on the City Hall, Jessie Mays Community Hall, Library and Pump house.

Public Works Design Standards

The City is authorized to regulate the procedure for maintenance, construction or alteration of public facilities.  Ordinance No. 342 adopted November 21, 2005, provides Public Works Design Standards to provide clear guidance regading the design and implementation of public facilities.  The Public Works Design Standards are covered in detail.
