Summer Reading 2024 features the idea of conservation. Conservation as a movement focuses on protecting species from extinction, maintaining and restoring habitats, enhancing ecosystem services and protecting biological diversity.

Summer Reading starts June 1st! Visit the library, pick up a Summer Reading Log and a brand-new free book for ages 0-18! We will also have a table at the Ice Cream Social on June 6th. Make a Summer Reading goal, it could be books, minutes or hours. Track your reading progress by coloring the butterflies. Listening to a book and singing songs count, too! Bring in your reading log to the library July 29th-August 5th for Spin and Win & the chance to win prizes! When you finish your goal return your log to the library by August 24th for a 2nd brand-new free book!

Summer Reading Schedule:

Summer Reading Kick-off with TAKOHACHI: Travel Japan with Music and Beyond! Saturday, June 8th at 1:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center Join us for an entertaining celebration that fosters cultural appreciation and understanding, uniting diverse communities through the universal language of music. Featuring both traditional and contemporary music played using a variety of Japanese instruments, including the taiko drums, shinobue bamboo flute, and tsugaru shamisen; people of all ages can enjoy and explore Japanese music, from the oldest to the newest genres, and gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Drop-in, no reservation needed.

Teen Tie Dye Friday, June 14th at 4:30 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center Teens in 6th-12th grade join StudioAwesome to create your own tie-dyed t-shirt! Materials will be provided. Please wear clothing that you are okay being messy in or getting dye on! T-shirt pick up will be the following Friday. Registration required, no library card needed to register.

Pollinators Workshop Thursday, June 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center.  Youth and families discover the wonders of pollination and its vital role in our ecosystem. Craft your very own mason bee house from recycled materials and learn how you can support these essential creatures in your own backyard. Registration required, no library card needed to register.

Creature Teachers, Wednesday, June 26th at 6:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center Creature Teachers aims to foster an appreciation for all wildlife, including the under-loved and misunderstood creatures. Come and meet our scaly, feathery and furry friends! Creature Teachers will talk about their creatures and then you’ll have a chance to meet them, and ask questions!  Drop in, no registration required.

Macro-invertebrate Water Bug Investigation with Clean Water Services Wednesday, July 10th at 1:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center Macroinvertebrates, insects and pollinators: Explore and learn more about insects in the water and air, the role they play. Where to find them and what you can do to help them. Drop in, no registration required.

Teen Felting Friendly Frogs with LeBrie Rich Friday, July 12th at 4:30 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center. Learn all about needle felting: what types of fibers work best, selecting appropriate felting needles, and how to sculpt complex shapes.  A frog is a great introduction to felting simple animals! By the end of the class you’ll be equipped with the skills to do all sorts of needle felting projects and have a new frog friend! Registration required, no library card needed to register.

Nathalia presents ‘Mil Colores-A Thousand Colors Bilingual Music Saturday, July 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center. Columbian-born songwriters and performer, Nathalia, hosts a fun and interactive performance of her original bilingual music. Exploring a variety of imaginative themes, Nathalia paints a world of musical colors by fusing popular styles with traditional Latin American sounds and rhythms. From start to finish, her catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and musical stories, will have families singing, dancing, even learning a little Spanish, in this exciting multicultural experience! Upcycled Collage Cards with SCRAP Creative Reuse! Saturday, July 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays Community Center. Discover the innovative world of SCRAP Creative Reuse, where creativity meets sustainability! SCRAP merges waste reduction with art education in engaging and imaginative ways! SCRAP will bring a wide array of unique secondhand collage materials to transform into hand-made cards for any occasion! Discover National Geographic magazines, vintage slides and photographs, ribbon, stickers and more! Learn basic pop-up card techniques from SCRAP team, and raft your very own custom cards. Drop in, no registration required.

Spin & Win Week! July 29th-August 5th during open library hours. Visit the library with your reading log and show off all the reading you've done so far this summer! Spin the wheel and have the chance to win prizes!

When you finish your reading goal bring your reading log to the library by August 24th for a 2nd brand-new free book to keep.
