Why North Plains?

There are many strategic advantages for businesses in North Plains:
LocationNorth Plains is located in a desirable and affordable West Coast location. It is part of the greater Portland metropolitan area which has the lowest lease rates for office and industrial space, as well as the lowest median home price and cost of living compared to any major city on the West Coast. Regionally, North Plains is located along the scenic Sunset Highway, and is one of the westernmost metro-area communities on the way to the Oregon Coast.
Quality of LifeNorth Plains is a small and growing semi-rural community of over 3,600 residents and 166  businesses with a great quality of life. Our gradual growth over the years has maintained a small-town atmosphere where residents enjoy the benefits of the well-managed public amenities, as well as easy access to major employers (Nike, Intel), recreation (some of the region’s best road cycling), entertainment, and nature, including quick Oregon Coast access. Read an overview of our community and all the great things we offer to help our residents and businesses thrive on our About Our Community page.
Infrastructure and Utilities North Plains has solid infrastructure and utilities. Clean Water Services provides wastewater treatment services. The power provider is Portland General Electric (PGE). PGE has a total combined generating capacity of 1,957 megawatts and they also operate several Reliability Centers throughout the region. NW Natural is the natural gas provider that serves residential, commercial, and industrial customers in western Oregon and southwest Washington.
TransportationEasy access to transportation routes and services are key in today’s global economy. North Plains is a growing economic hub due to its central location along US Hwy 26 connecting businesses and workforce to the Silicon Forest centered in Hillsboro (10 minutes), Nike World Headquarters (20 minutes), Portland, Interstate 5 and 84 (25 minutes), Portland International Airport (45 minutes), Oregon Wine Country via US Highway 47 (50 minutes), and the Oregon Coast (about an hour).

  • Transit: North Plains is served by Ride Connection Community Bus Service which provides a free shuttle to the Tri-Met public transportation system hub in Hillsboro, the western terminus of the 33-mile metropolitan light rail line which links Portland's west and east suburbs as well as the Portland International Airport.
  • Air: The Portland International Airport (PDX) is the only passenger airport served by the major airlines in the metropolitan area. Located approximately 45 minutes from North Plains, full-service daily passenger and cargo flights to major U.S. cities and international destinations are available. The Hillsboro Airport is less than 10 minutes away and is Oregon's busiest general aviation airport, with more than 200,000 operations annually. The airport provides all the facilities to support jet and propeller-driven aircraft and helicopters. Charter companies fly their aircraft and helicopters in and out of the airport, and several major corporations have hangars there. Restaurants and hotels are located nearby along with rental car services at the terminal. Both the PDX and Hillsboro airports are managed by the Port of Portland.
  • Marine: The Port of Portland manages the only deep draft port in the region. Terminal 6, located in north Portland west of Interstate 5, is the region's primary container and auto handling terminal with vessels calling daily. Barge handling capabilities, as well as direct ship to rail access to intermodal containers are available. Located about 45 minutes from North Plains, drayage companies find the easy access to US Hwy 26 convenient when transporting goods to and from the Port of Portland.
  • Rail: Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR) services North Plains and operates a 520-mile regional system of rail lines in western Oregon with freight capacity and Class 1 connections. There are spur line opportunities along the North Plains corridor.
