Brianna Sowinski

brianna_sowinskiHow long have you worked here?
I started working for the library in 2016 as a part-time library assistant. In September 2021. I was hired in my new full-time position as Librarian 1, with an emphasis on school outreach, communications, and acquisitions.

What do you do in your role for the City and Library?
At the library, I oversee our adult and youth programs, and manage the library’s website, calendars, newsletter, social media, and publicity. I work with Library Director, Robin Doughty, on selecting library materials. I created our Teen Book Box program and coordinate Teen Council which are both a passion of mine.  I work with our Early Literacy Specialist, Emily West, on OBOB Book Club this year to offer it to both 3rd-5th and 6th-8th grade groups. I love getting to visit North Plains Elementary and Atfalati Ridge Elementary to share all the library has to offer students and families and to bring excitement about reading to everyone! Extra perk:  I enjoy working at the library desk, seeing new and familiar faces and helping our patrons find what they need!

What do you like best about your job?
So many things! When students come into the library after I’ve visited their classrooms and say hi to me it makes my day! I love it when someone lets me know they’ve enjoyed the book, TV show, or movie I suggested. I’ve been at the library for 6 years so now I’m seeing North Plains youth grow up, teens going on to college, and storytime preschoolers move to elementary school, which is pretty special.

What is your typical workday like?
One thing I love about working at the library is that every day is different! If I use today as an example, I opened the library, worked at the desk in the morning, and helped patrons check out books after storytime. I had a meeting with youth librarians from Washington County and the Oregon library community, put together twenty Teen Book boxes, and then prepared for an upcoming program.

I serve because...
To me, public libraries are magical. A public library is the only place where people can go to find information, ask a question, use our services like the internet, copy, scan, & fax, ebooks, get tutoring, or attend a program, everything for free. And that’s just a small portion of what the library offers. We also have a free streaming service, access to newspapers and magazines…I’ll have to stop because I could go on and on!

What I love about North Plains is...
I love the annual events that the North Plains Event Association works hard to put on each year! I had so much fun scooping ice cream at this year’s Ice Cream Social and chatting with other volunteers, co-workers and community members outside of the library.  Another special thing about North Plains is that so many dedicated volunteers give their time and efforts to make North Plains a great place to live and work it - from the Mayor and our City Council Members to our steadfast and diligent library volunteers.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?
I read a lot which isn’t probably that surprising. I love browsing cookbooks and reading graphic novels. I like to cook, garden, hike, ride my bike and play video games. I love the game Stardew Valley, as it actually reminds me of North Plains! I’m also trying to learn how to roller skate.
