Oregon American Public Works Association's 2021 Project of the Year

ashley_martinThe City of North Plains Veterans Memorial Park was recently named the Oregon American Public Works Association’s (APWA) Project of the Year for structures less than $5 million.

The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects. The Veterans Memorial Park project was selected after review by the Oregon APWA chapter awards committee as being most deserving of this statewide award.

“It is an honor that our park, which celebrates and honors our nation’s heroes and was built through many partnerships, has received this award,” said Public Works Director Blake Boyles. “Thanks to the hard work of our Public Works crew and major support from Kittelson & Associates, Subcom Excavation, and many others, this beautiful and meaningful park was made possible for the community.”

After years of planning, the Veterans Memorial Park officially opened on November 11, 2020. The park celebrates our nation’s heroes, as well as offers a place to relax and reflect. This 11,000 square foot park features a 100-foot flagpole with a 50x30 foot flag as the centerpiece, commemorative plaques honoring our Veterans and POW’s for their service and sacrifice, benches, the town's first EV charging stations, an American Legion flag disposal box, bike rack and repair station, and more. The design also incorporates more than 1,500 bricks, and the opportunity for residents and friends of North Plains to make their contribution to the project by “Buying a Brick.” The park will be the site of a 2022 Veterans Day Celebration this November 11.
