North Plains, Oregon is a small, semi-rural city of just over 3,600 residents located 17 miles west of Downtown Portland. Formerly known as Glencoe, the community has existed for over 100 years, with formal incorporation as North Plains in 1963. Our gradual growth over the years has maintained a small-town atmosphere where residents enjoy the benefits of the well-managed infrastructure of improved streets, parks, and water systems, as well as easy access to major employers, recreation, entertainment, and nature.
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Silicon Forest, North Plains is part of a thriving tech scene and is within a short drive to the Portland metro area’s larger cities. Our residents have access to jobs at multinational employers such as
Intel,
Genentech, and
Nike, along with diverse industries including education, healthcare, agriculture, and craft beer brewing.
Oregon Canadian and
Jewett Cameron are two of North Plains’ larger employers.
The City of North Plains and community partners the
North Plains Events Association and the
North Plains Chamber of Commerce produce many events to bring our community together. These include our world-famous
North Plains Elephant Garlic Festival the second week of August and an annual Fourth of July Celebration. The City has also sponsored concerts in the park and provides library programs for kids and adults, and activities at the North Plains Senior Center. In addition to the signature Jessie Mays Community Park, North Plains has a number of small
parks throughout town and a community garden. In the warm weather, LaMordden Park offers the City's only water play feature. There are also two trails - the 1-mile Ghost Creek Walking Path with opportunities to view wildlife and the West Union Pedestrian Path which runs adjacent to the south side of West Union Road starting at Glencoe Road and connecting with the east side of town. Expanding park areas and walking trails is a high priority for the community.
We are also perfectly located to provide access to a wide range of entertainment and recreation. Bike riders can be seen on the rural roads in and around our community every day, rain or shine. The City partners with Ride with GPS to offer
Cycle North Plains local cycling route planning to residents and visitors.
North Plains Gliderport provides unique glider and sailplane experiences for flights over the Willamette Valley.
Pumpkin Ridge Golf features two 18-hole golf courses designed by Bob Cupp that are considered among the best anywhere. The courses have hosted events with more than 100,000 spectators for the USGA, LGPA, and US Amateur Championships.
Hornings Hideout offers fishing, camping, picnicking, and disc golf and is a nationally known venue for popular events like the Warrior Dash and Northwest String Summit. North Plains is also within an hour’s drive of the beautiful Oregon Coast.
The community is served by the
Hillsboro School District (HSD), the fourth-largest public school district in the State of Oregon. We currently have two grade schools, North Plains Elementary and Atfalati Ridge Elementary, which both feed into Evergreen Middle School and Glencoe High School in nearby Hillsboro. Both schools are connected to the HSD’s extensive fiber optic ring, providing exceptional broadband to the buildings.
